Winter in Turku!

Sat, 18/02/2012 - 17:52 — Webmaster
Winter in Turku!

Sledding, winter swimming, cross country skiing, ice skating, downhill skiing, snowboarding etc. It's all possible right here in Turku! There's plenty of snow and more to come, so now it's high time to enjoy it! Here's a list what to do, when and where. Hopefully you'll find these examples useful while looking for winter fun in February! Many schools around Turku keep week 8 as their winter holiday (hiihtoloma in Finnish, skiing holiday) so you can see many children and families enjoying the winter sports and we recommend you to enjoy snow too!

Please notice that the not all of the following events are organised by ESN. We just want to share with you ideas what everything you can do in snowy Turku :)

Winter sports in Turku
ESN IAC winter swimming 19.2.
Shrove Tuesday - Laskiainen 21.2.
ESN IAC trip to Moomin World 26.2.

Winter sports in Turku

Winter swimming: Are you already familiar with the Finnish sauna? Why not add swimming in the ice cold sea to the experience? Winter swimming is not as scary as it might sound and you feel super afterwards! If open water is not available, rolling in the snow works fine too! You can find more information about winter swimming here http://www.turunavantouimarit.fi/InEnglish.htm and http://www.turku.fi/Public/default.aspx?contentid=28817

Cross country skiing: It is possible to rent skis and related equipment at Impivaara  Skiing tracks with map information. Cross country skiing is way easier than downhill skiing and perfect way to combine doing sports and enjoying Finnish nature.

Ice Skating: Skating fields with map links: choose Ice fields / West or East side of Aurajoki river. Please note, that you need to bring your own skates in order to go to those ice-skating fields. You can rent ice skates at Parkki www.turku.fi/public/default.aspx?contentid=29039  where you can also play ice hockey. Another ice skating rental place is at Kupittaa http://tinyurl.com/kupittaa  where you can skate around 500 m track. Entrance doesn't cost anything and you can try either normal ice skates (4e) or nordic tour skates (5e)

Sledding: Possible almost everywhere when you bring your own sledge ("pulkka" or "liukuri"), also normal plastic bag works well! Vartiovuorenmäki  is one of the most popular places inside the city but there are several other ones around too. You can find map links to the bigger places here.

Downhill skiing and snowboarding: Yes, Turku is far from Lapland but we still have one ski center: Hirvensalo (Kakskerrantie 111 ) You can rent all the required equipment and buy a ski pass for the whole day or just couple of hours. Also possibility to attend ski school http://www.tusla.net/uusi/ The place is very small but it's perfect place for true beginners to get started with skiing. Also the view to the city center is quite nice from the top of the hill! :)

Remember to dress up according the weather and be careful when walking on the ice. Even though the sea and river have frozen there can be weak spots under the bridges or in other places where the current is stronger.

Shrove Tuesday – Fastlaskiainen 21.2.

The Student Unions of the University of Turku (TYY), of the Åbo Akademi University (ÅAS), of the Turku University of Applied Sciences (TUO), and of the University of Applied Sciences Novia (Novium) organise a common Shrove Tuesday -event, Fastlaskiainen, on the Vartiovuori hill on Tuesday, 21st of February from 2-5 pm. Welcome to slide the hill or just enjoy the atmosphere and watch the sliding teams, this is as close to a spring carnival as it gets this time of the year! There is a sliding competition and Shrovetide buns and hot juice.

The team that performs the most stylish sliding will be awarded! Features to be considered in the evaluation include sledge and dressing of the team, and sky is the limit in their design. Additional points will be rewarded for team spirit and crossing the finish line.

Gather a team, build a sledge, and come to enjoy the best sliding of the century! Register your team for the sliding by February 17th to Marina Stenbäck, the responsible for student affairs of ÅAS, at marina-karen(at)abo.fi

This event is also in Facebook.

Other Shrove Tuesday events:

After Pulka @ Kåren 21.2. 16:30-  at Kåren
Liukuva Laskiainen 21.2. 22-04 at Börs Night Club

ESN IAC trip to Moominworld 26.2.

Did you know that the Moominworld is located in Naantali, the neighbor city of Turku? During summer time Moominworld is open daily but winter time Moomins hibernate and Moominworld is closed. The exception to this rule is Moomin Magic Winter, when the park opens for the week of 18 - 26 February 2012 and becomes the spot for winter fun! Moominworld is open then every day 10-16.

You can visit Moomins either on your own or join ESN IAC on Sunday 26.2. Members of ESN will take you to Naantali with bus. Meeting place is Kauppatori (market square) at 11:30. Don't be late! Reserve some cash for the bus ticket, your local traffic bus card might not cover the trip to Naantali.

Tickets cost normally 16 e/person but together with ESN IAC there is possibility to group discount. For more information about the program, prices, how to get there, etc. please see here. Facebook event: https://www.facebook.com/events/294618853935975/
